Dear Colleagues,
Heightened national concern for energy independence and security, fueled by record gasoline prices and political uncertainties in oil-producing countries, has escalated biofuels production and governmental, commercial, and academic research to all new highs. Much like a microbial growth curve, biofuels research is transitioning from years of slow but steady progress to unprecedented growth in funding and opportunity. While early research focused on enabling technologies, a new wave of national interest has expanded from technical details and process engineering to include a much broader scope of biofuels issues. The recent emphasis and increased funding for alternative energy has been tempered by issues of large-scale implementation of biofuels, pushing biofuels sustainability to the forefront of national policy and research. Driven by concerns over food vs. fuel, carbon sequestration and climate change, water and soil conservation, land use, and net energy yield, sustainability has become integral to any biofuels research effort. Although both fundamental and applied research continues to improve biomass-to-fuels technology, driving down costs, increasing yields, and reducing environmental impacts, the timeline of deployment is increasingly dependent on whether or not the process can be sustained at a meaningful level. Once relegated to a few process models and life cycle analyses, biofuels sustainability is now an essential and critical aspect to any viable work in the bioenergy world.
The inaugural Biofuels: Science and Innovation for Sustainable Development Conference will be held June 28-30, 2009 in San Francisco, Ca. This conference will focus on several key areas of biomass sustainability as well as showcase some of the latest biomass conversion research techniques. Environmental, economic, and feedstock sustainability will be covered in three plenary sessions, with session four geared towards cutting-edge techniques in biomass conversion research. A panel discussion will cover public policy in the biofuels industry while the commercialization of biofuels will be explored as a workshop.
Please bring this conference to the attention of your colleagues and business associates. Please register early and submit an abstract. We look forward to welcoming you to the inaugural Biofuels: Science and Innovation for Sustainable Development Conference.
Best regards,
